Martín Andrade-Pérez is engaged in addressing the impacts of armed conflicts and displacement on the cultural traditions of the communities, developing methodologies for safeguarding intangible heritage in these contexts. His expertise builds on many years of experience on projects for safeguarding cultural traditions in armed conflict contexts. His research also focuses on the relationship between intangible heritage and religion, critically examining how recognising religious practices as the heritage of humanity is changing and redefining the borders between secularity and religion.
Martín Andrade-Pérez has been a researcher at the Erigaie Foundation in Colombia since 2011 and a guest researcher at the ethnology group of the Meertens Institute in the Netherlands. He is a guest lecturer at the Master of Applied Museum and Heritage Studies at the Reinwardt Academy (The Netherlands), an external PhD student at the University of Groningen, and a facilitator of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. He has worked with the Ministry of Culture of Colombia (2007-2011) and has over 20 years of experience working with intangible heritage-related projects. Between 2017 and 2021, he was a member of the Evaluation Body of the UNESCO 2003 Convention and is a tutor of the UNESCO MOOC on intangible heritage and sustainable development.
