Lecture by T. Sirbu: Soviet “Gypsy Fantasy” Abroad in the Wake of the Decrees toward Roma in the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia after 1945
On 3 November 2026, another international research seminar was held at the Institute of Philosophy of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Once again, the seminar focused on Roma studies. The lecture, entitled Soviet “Gypsy Fantasy” Abroad in the Wake of the Decrees toward Roma in the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia after 1945, was delivered by Tatiana Sirbu of the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), who has been undertaking a fellowship stay at our institute from February to November 2026 under the mentorship of Professor Elena Marushiakova.
In her presentation, she introduced the first results of her research on representations of Soviet artists in post-war Slovakia, using Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet The Stone Flower as a case study.
The lecture was also an output of the Memorandum of Cooperation with the Belgian research institute at Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), namely the Laboratory for Prospective Anthropology (LAAP) within the Institute for the Analysis of Change in Contemporary and Historical Societies (IACCHOS). The memorandum was concluded within the framework of cooperation related to the APVV-22-0389 RELIROMA project and the APVV-25-0625 project Roma in Ukraine between the Past and the Future.
