DARIAH-SK: a domestic community has established a national consortium to support digital humanities

We are pleased to announce that the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology Slovak Academy of Sciences is the co-founder and main coordinating institution of the national node DARIAH-SK.
How to ensure the long-term sustainability and accessibility of digital cultural heritage? How can a research infrastructure help analyze societal problems? How to train a new generation of humanities scholars in digital skills? The pan-European initiative DARIAH ERIC (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) is looking for answers to these questions.
What is DARIAH ERIC?
It is a European research infrastructure that supports and develops digital methods in the humanities and arts. It serves as a transnational platform for working with digital tools and data, as well as for international cooperation. Since 2014, it has been part of the ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium). This ERIC consortium was established by the EU to support the creation and operation of large-scale international research infrastructures.
Why is the establishment of DARIAH-SK crucial?
The establishment of a national consortium will bring consolidation of the domestic digital humanities community, systematic support for the provision of infrastructure services for top-notch research and education, as well as the integration of Slovak activities into the European research area. The national platform DARIAH-SK is of strategic importance for the transformation of domestic humanities for the digital age.
The founding members of DARIAH-SK include the following institutions:
- Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology Slovak Academy of Sciences (national coordinating institution)
- Ľ. Štúr Institute of Linguistics Slovak Academy of Sciences
- Institute of Archaeology Slovak Academy of Sciences
- Central Library of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
- Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information
- Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies
- Off grid lab
Thematically, DARIAH-SK focuses on the digitization and processing of research collections, the creation of open digital repositories for cultural and historical heritage, as well as the creation and analysis of corpus and other language databases. An important part is the popularization of Open Science Policy and ethical analysis of the latest technologies.
In the near future, DARIAH-SK will focus on coordinating the joint activities of partners, securing financial resources to meet medium-term goals, and the entry of the Slovak Republic, represented by DARIAH-SK, into DARIAH ERIC.
DARIAH-SK is an open platform, willing to accept new relevant domestic partners. If you would like to learn more or join our activities, please do not hesitate to contact us.
