Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov took part in the international conference Current State of Romani Studies

On May 28, 2025, Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov participated in the international conference Current State of Romani Studies V, where they delivered a keynote presentation titled “The Phenomenon of ‘Preferred Ethnic Identity’ in Some Romani Communities”. Their contribution focused on the analytical interpretation of cases where certain Romani groups in Central and Eastern Europe deliberately adopt alternative designations for their ethnic identity.
The conference also featured Julieta Rotaru, who presented a paper entitled “Slovak Romani Studies School. Slovak Research in the Framework of the Gypsy Lore Society”, which was the result of her research stay at the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology SAS, funded by the SAIA program. In her talk, she explored the specificities of the Slovak tradition in Romani studies and its connections to international scholarly networks, with a focus on research concerning Hungarian-speaking Roma in Central Europe.
On this occasion, several extended expert interviews were recorded and will be made available in digital form on the websites of the State Scientific Library in Prešov: www.svkpo.sk and www.portalsvk.sk.
