Elena Marushiakova Wins the 2024 Science and Technology Award
On November 15, 2024, a celebratory gala evening took place in the Winter Riding Hall of Bratislava Castle, during which awards were presented to nine laureates of the Ministry of Education, Research, Development, and Youth of the Slovak Republic – the Award for Science and Technology for 2024.
The prestigious award in the category Personality of Science and Technology 2024 for the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) was received by Prof. Elena Marushiakova-Popova from the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology, Slovak Academy of Sciences. She was honored for her internationally successful scientific and research work in the field of Romani studies and the history of the Roma as an ethnic minority in Europe.
Prof. Elena Marushiakova-Popova is recognized worldwide as an expert in the field of Romani studies. She has received several prestigious awards abroad. Between 2016 and 2023, she led the ERC-ADG RomaInterbellum project – Roma Civic Emancipation Between the Two World Wars at St. Andrews University in Scotland as the principal investigator. Prof. Marushiakova-Popova also served for 10 years as the president of the international organization Gypsy Lore Society (founded in 1888 in Britain, later based in New York, USA, and now headquartered in Slovakia). She is the founder of an international school, attracting students from multiple continents, with more than half of her students being Roma from various countries.
