Recording of the Gala Ceremony for the 2024 Science and Technology Awards
STVR aired a recording of the 2024 Science and Technology Awards ceremony on 23 November 2024, during which our colleague, Prof. Elena Marushiakova-Popova, received the prestigious award in the category “Personality of Science and Technology 2024” for the Slovak Academy of Sciences. She was honoured for her internationally acclaimed scientific research in the field of Romani studies and the history of Roma as an ethnic minority in Europe.
Prof. Elena Marushiakova-Popova is a globally recognised expert in the field of Romani studies. She has received numerous prestigious awards abroad and served as the principal investigator of the ERC-ADG project RomaInterbellum – Roma Civic Emancipation Between The Two World Wars at St. Andrews University in Scotland from 2016 to 2023.
Marushiakova-Popova also served for 10 years as the president of the international organisation Gypsy Lore Society, which was founded in 1888 in Britain, later based in New York, USA, and is now headquartered in Slovakia.
She is the founder of an international academic school that attracts students from multiple continents, with more than half of her students being Roma from various countries.
