Slovakia Joins the European Elite of Digital Research in the Humanities: The DARIAH-SK National Consortium Becomes a Member of DARIAH ERIC
The domestic community has achieved a significant milestone in the field of digital humanities. Represented by DARIAH-SK, Slovakia officially became a member of the DARIAH ERIC European research infrastructure in February 2026. The integration process and the consortium’s activities are coordinated by the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
“Joining the European infrastructure will bring systematic support for cutting-edge research and the development of services. It is a crucial step for the Slovak humanities to master the digital transformation and become an equal partner within the European Research Area,” stated Andrej Gogora, the national coordinator of DARIAH-SK.
DARIAH-SK networks domestic institutions to provide infrastructural services for both the academic community and the general public. Thematically, it focuses on the digitization and processing of research collections, the creation of open digital repositories for cultural and historical heritage, and the development of corpus and other linguistic databases. An important component is the popularization of open science and the ethical analysis of technologies. The founding members of the consortium are:
- Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology, SAS (national coordinating institution)
- Ľudovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics, SAS
- Institute of Archaeology, SAS
- Central Library of the SAS
- Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information
- Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies
- Off grid lab, Civic Association
Connection to cutting-edge European infrastructure and access to international working groups will open up new opportunities for collaboration for Slovak researchers. Furthermore, a major benefit of this integration will be the increased visibility of national projects within the European space, which will fundamentally enhance their utilization and overall societal impact.
