T. Hrustič and A. Belák co-authors of a publication on the impact of COVID-19 on Roma communities
Our colleagues Tomáš Hrustič and Andrej Belák contributed as editors to the Slovak section of a groundbreaking publication that brings together the testimonies of NGO workers, field social workers, activists, scholars, and healthcare professionals describing the devastating impact of COVID-19 on Roma communities worldwide.
The contributors reveal how the pandemic exacerbated the structural disadvantages faced by Roma people, while also documenting their resilience and creativity in responding to the crisis. Through innovative textual formats—including moving personal reflections, memoirs, scholarly analyses, and diary excerpts—this volume provides a blueprint for collaboration and dialogue in times of global crisis.
Edited by Paloma Gay y Blasco and Martin Fotta, the book was published in July 2023 by Berghahn Books.
It represents the most comprehensive chronicle of Romani experiences of the COVID-19 crisis ever compiled. The contributions include memoirs, opinion essays, interview transcripts, ethnographic analyses, and even a unique short story by Romani writer Iveta Kokyová, along with other works that blend or transcend these genres.
