- Professor Veselin Popov has been affiliated with the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology Slovak Academy of Sciences, a public research institution, since 2023. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of Research Professor at the University of St Andrews (UK) for the preceding seven years. His research interests lie in the field of Romani Studies, and he has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork and archival research in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, as well as in Central Asia. His principal publications include seminal monographs on Romani history and the ethnography of Roma in Bulgaria (1997), on the Roma in the Ottoman Empire (2000), a volume concerning the Roma in the Black Sea region (2008), and a study on the Roma in Central Asia and the Caucasus (2016). Professor Popov is the co-editor and author of six volumes dedicated to Romani folklore and oral history, in addition to numerous other books, articles, book chapters, evaluative studies, and museum exhibition catalogues. He is a recipient (jointly with Elena Marushiakova) of the Romanipe Prize (2022), awarded by the Initiative Group for Romani Culture in Bulgaria in recognition of his contributions to the scholarly investigation of the Romani community in Bulgaria and globally. Furthermore, his publication Roma Voices in History: A Source Book. Roma Civic Emancipation in Central, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe from the 19th Century until the Second World War (Marushiakova & Popov, 2021) received the Best Historical Materials award for publications in 2020 and 2021 from the American Library Association.
