Ornament and Object. Decorative Tradition in Slovakia
- DANGLOVÁ, Oľga: Ornament a predmet. Dekoratívna tradícia na Slovensku - Ornament and Object. Decorative Tradition in Slovakia. Ústredie ľudovej umeleckej výroby, Bratislava 2019, 418 p.
The publication presents a picture of a special area of the artistic tradition in Slovakia known as folk art. Traditions whose origin was anchored primarily in peasant-pastoral culture, but also related to the rural environment of small towns. Its characteristic feature was decorativeness, based on the deep-rooted need of common people to beautify the things that surrounded them.
The characteristic feature of the folk style, the inclination to ornamentation, is approached by the author through objects made of various materials. He observes them in the art of weaving and embroidery, in the decoration of objects made of wood and metal, found in ceramics and painted decoration. The starting point is museum material, uncovering the wealth of collections in numerous Slovak and foreign museums. The rich illustration part is complemented by an understandable explanation, which combines the author’s rigorous knowledge with love for expressions of folk creativity. The book can be inspirational for contemporary living creation in the field of design, but also popular culture.
