The book Jews in Slovakia: Post-War Generations presents existing findings from ethnological research on the second and third post-Holocaust generations, while also encompassing the first generation. Beyond the introductory and concluding sections, the text is organized into three thematic blocks: “The Generation of Survival,” “Children of the Holocaust,” and “The Present and Future of the Community.”
Employing the oral history method, the author conducted over 70 in-depth interviews focusing on themes such as the fate of parents during the Holocaust, identity, intergenerational communication, and the transmission of trauma. Given that the Jewish community has been adversely affected by three major waves of emigration over the past century—the Holocaust deportations, the post-liberation “Aliyah of Hope” to Palestine/Israel, and the exodus following the 1968 Warsaw Pact occupation of Czechoslovakia—the author also incorporates the insights and perspectives of individuals who opted for emigration but maintained their ties to Slovakia.
