Elena Marushiakova Contributed to CIEMEN Report on Self-Determination and the New Global Context
The renowned Catalan think-tank CIEMEN has published, through Nationalia, the report “Periodisme, dret a l’autodeterminació i nou context mundial (Journalism, the Right to Self-Determination and the New World Context)”. The publication seeks to advance knowledge about peoples and nations that are marginalized or whose identity and existence are under threat, while fostering the recognition and respect of individual and collective rights as a foundation for sustainable peace and democratic development.
Among central contributions to the report is the expert interview with our colleague Elena Marushiakova, whose insights provide an in-depth analysis of complex nation-building processes in contemporary contexts. Conducted by Spanish journalist Miguel Fernández Ibáñez in November and December 2025, the interview addresses the topic “Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in Kosovo: How a War Can Be Used to Achieve Recognition as a Nation.” Drawing on her extensive research, Elena Marushiakova offers a nuanced perspective on the historical and political dynamics shaping the status and recognition of these communities, highlighting broader implications for understanding stateless nations in the current global environment.
