Based on the data from the field research and available literature, the author Peter Salner observes the relationship of the Jewish community members to Judaism developed during the 19th – 21st century.
The findings show that tensions between representatives of Orthodoxy and adherents of the Jewish Enlightenment were already evident at the time of the famous Rabbi Chatam Sofer (1806) and lasted until the Holocaust. The tragic events of 1938-1945; and decades of the communist regime (1948-1989) radically changed the Holocaust survivors’ attitudes toward Judaism.
