Lecture at the International Summer School in İzmir
Our colleagues E. Marushiakova and V. Popov will take part in the international summer school ‘Roma in the Ottoman and Post-Ottoman World’, which is being held in İzmir, Turkey, on 20 August 2026.
The summer school introduces an interdisciplinary perspective to the international fields of Romani and imperial studies, bringing together history, social anthropology, sociology, urban studies, political science, memory studies, and cultural studies. The programme addresses the historical development, contemporary realities, and future challenges of Roma communities across the Ottoman and post-Ottoman world.
E. Marushiakova and V. Popov will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Roma Muslims in the Balkans: From Muslim Roma to Romani Islam’, focusing on Muslim Roma communities in the Balkans and on the historical and social transformations in the relationship between Romani identity and Islam.
