Our colleagues Soňa G. Lutherová and Ľubica Voľanská took part in the 23rd IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics in Amsterdam, held from 5 to 8 July 2026. This year’s theme addressed the question of how to age well in a globalised world.
As part of a session organised by COST Action PAAR-Net (Participatory Approaches with Older Adults), dedicated to participation, care and social innovation, they presented a paper entitled “Ageing in Place, Caring at a Distance: Lived Realities of Stay-Behind Parents”. Within this COST Action, an interdisciplinary international team is also preparing a scoping review examining the impact of participatory approaches involving older people on ageism. Its research aims and methodology were likewise presented at the congress in the form of a poster, “Impact of Participatory Approaches Involving Older Adults on Ageism: A Scoping Review Study Protocol”.
For the Slovak context, this theme is of particular importance, as it encourages us to view ageing not merely as a social or health challenge, but also as a matter of dignity, participation and the active co-decision-making of older people in matters directly affecting them.
