The Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology SAS participated in the organization of the Gypsy Lore Society World Congress in Brazil
Tatiana Zachar Podolinská and Elena Marushiakova, as members of the Gypsy Lore Society Board of Directors, acted as members of the academic organizing committee of the congress, participated in the deliberations of the Board, made their own active contributions during the conference, and chaired their thematic panels as well as several conference sessions.
As a keynote speaker, the president of GLS, Tatiana Zachar Podolinská, opened the Congress. In her lecture, she highlighted the need for an extension of the thematic and methodological scope of Romani studies by digital anthropology and ethnography and the necessity of tracing the processes of making and presenting various identities on social networks and media. During the conference, several negotiations occurred with academic institutions in Brazil, the USA, France, Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and Iceland.
The GLS Board of Directors decided that in 2024, the Congress will be held in Sofia (Bulgaria) and in 2025 in Paris (France). The Congress was closed by the Annual Meeting of GLS members, at which the president announced the Board’s decision to relocate the company from the USA to Europe due to more flexible administrative and financial operability.
The thematic panel dedicated to religiosity and spirituality among the Roma is the first output of the RELIROMA APVV-22-389 project Research on religiosity, spirituality, and non-religiosity among the Roma in Slovakia (July 1, 2023––June 30, 2027).
