Winegrowing town in ethnological perspective

The monograph is a synthesis of knowledge gained from the author’s many years of historical and ethnographic research of cities in the Small Carpathians region.
The focus of the in-depth qualitative study is on the societies of the towns of Pezinok and Modra, in which a professional group of winegrowers has developed since the Middle Ages as de facto bearers of a specific economic and cultural feature of these settlements. At the end of the 20th century, viticulture and vine production began to develop here again as private enterprises, after more than forty years of discontinuity. In the process of their gradual economic stabilization, the business interests of winegrowers began to correspond with the development efforts of local governments, they stimulated the city’s environmental activism and experiential wine tourism. Vinegrowing towns and social processes in them have thus become an important phenomenon of regional development. The presented publication contributes to their knowledge from an ethnological point of view.
