Conference Suburbanisation: Community, Identity, and Everydayness

The Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is pleased to invite you to the conference Suburbanisation: Community, Identity, and Everydayness, which will take place from April 28-29, 2025, at the Salvator Center in Bratislava.

• Suburbanisation is a continuing trend in the development dynamics of post-socialist cities, which are increasingly expanding into their hinterlands. Due to the growing intensity of daily interactions with the urban centre, this territory is becoming a space of social, economic, and cultural transformations. In the context of migration, not only are the landscape and built environment of growing settlements changing, but new identities are also being negotiated and created, relationships to the locality are being re-evaluated, and individual experiences of home are being reframed. 

• This event aims to bring together scholars from diverse fields—such as human geography, demography, social anthropology, or urban sociology—to engage in a dialogue about the region’s socio-spatial dynamics transforming suburban landscapes. By combining qualitative and quantitative insights, this conference aims to foster a deeper understanding of the spatial, economic, social, and cultural transformations at play in suburbanisation

Thematic focus of the conference:

• local communities in suburban spaces,
• mobility, commuting, and daily rhythms in the suburbs,
• original and new inhabitants in a process of dynamic change,
• the future of suburban spaces,
• demographic transformations of the city and the suburbs,
• processes of identification with place, the making and remaking of home,
• housing versus home,
• the growth of suburban space and the environment,
• identity of a place and belonging.
