The 9th edition of the international event Academy of Romani Studies – ARS 2024
The Institute of Ethnology and Social AnthropologySAS and the Department of Romani Studies, Department of Ethnology, Central European and Balkan Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, are organizing the 9th edition of the international event Academy of Romani Studies – ARS 2024, which will take place on November 14-15, 2024, in Prague. The event is held as part of the APVV RELIROMA project.
IESA SAS became the coordinator of a European MSCA project
In September 2024, our institute became the coordinator of the RomChords project, supported under the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) scheme of the Horizon Europe program. The project will expand the boundaries of our research in ethnomusicology and Romani studies, foster interdisciplinary collaboration at both national and international levels, and contribute to the preservation of Romani intangible cultural heritage.
A new thematic issue of Slovenský národopis/Slovak Ethnology 3/2024 has been published
The special issue, published in English, is dedicated to the theme Family as a Safe Haven? Families in Social Practice and Narratives in Times of Crises. The guest editors are Soňa G. Lutherová from the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Adriana Zaharijević from the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory at the University of Belgrade.
Martina Wilsch presented her research as part of the LIFEMAKE seminar series at the University of Helsinki
Our colleague Martina Wilsch presented on October 29, 2024, at the LIFEMAKE seminar with a lecture titled Ukrainian Refugee Families in Slovakia through the Lens of Care and Social Reproduction. The LIFEMAKE seminar series is an activity within the research project on social reproduction and survival in times of collapse, conducted by the University of Helsinki.
International Research on the Availability of Services in Roma Communities in Slovakia
IESA SAS has launched an expert project for the international institution National Democratic Institute (NDI, Washington, D.C.) to map the availability of public services in Romani communities in Slovakia. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of various local service delivery systems and identify potential objective and subjective barriers to their full functionality for all citizens, regardless of ethnic or social status.

We would like to draw your attention to the 23rd edition of the International Film Festival Etnofilm, taking place from 12 to 15 November 2024 in Čadca, Nitra, Bratislava, Žilina a Banská Bystrica. This documentary film festival showcases a wide range of themes in social and cultural anthropology and ethnology. International Project – Doctoral Network in CEE within SSH
The Presidium of the Slovak Academy of Sciences approved on October 10, 2024 the international project of the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology (IESA SAS, Bratislava, Slovakia) and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IAE PAS, Warsaw, Poland) titled Cultural Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Social Research from Central and Eastern Europe – Doctoral Network Preparation, submitted under the joint projects of SAS–PAS (Warsaw, Poland).

Annual Meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society in Sofia and Romani Studies Conference
From September 24-27, 2024, the annual meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society was held in Sofia, in conjunction with an international conference on Romani studies. The conference's diverse program included a special panel supported by the APVV Reliroma project, titled Religiosity, Spirituality, and Non-religiosity among the Roma.

Slovak Academy of Sciences award in the category of Outstanding scientific monograph
On September 18, 2024, the Presidium of the SAS awarded researchers who published results of exceptional scientific prestige. Among the awardees were our colleagues: Mgr. Zuzana Panczová, PhD., PhDr. Gabriela Kiliánová, CSc., and PhDr. Mgr. Tomáš Kubisa, PhD., who received the award in the category of Outstanding Scientific Monograph for the work on ethnography in the service of the Third Empire Národopis v službách Tretej ríše. Elena Marushiakova's project proposal received the Seal of Excellence
The project proposal eRoma - eHISTORY OF ROMA EMANCIPATION, submitted by our colleague Elena Marushiakova for funding under the Horizon Europe ERC call ERC-2024-POC, ERC PROOF OF CONCEPT GRANTS, has been awarded the Seal of Excellence. This is a mark of quality granted to project proposals that successfully meet all the strict participation conditions and evaluation criteria but could not be funded due to the available budget for the calls.
