A new publication by Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov at Brill | Schöningh
Our colleagues Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov have just published a book at Brill | Schöningh titled Stalin vs Gypsies: Roma and Political Repressions in the USSR. In it, the authors describe the political repressions against the Roma, which they understand as part of the mass terror and brutality against all Soviet citizens, integrating the history of the Roma into the general history of the USSR. The publication is available in Open Access.
IESA SAS published the Book of Abstracts from the conference "Quest: How to Make Digital Work For, Not Against Learning"
The online conference "Quest: How to Make Digital Work For, Not Against Learning" took place on June 6, 2024, as part of the project Exploring the Past in Peace, supported by the ERASMUS+ grant scheme. The Book of Abstracts contains contributions from conference participants in Slovak, English, Hungarian, and Italian and is available online.
The deadline for submitting paper abstracts for the Academy of Romani Studies 2024 has been extended to August 20, 2024
The Academy of Romani Studies 2024, to be held on November 14–15, 2024, in Prague, aims to present current research related to Romani communities in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia and to provide a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers from various fields — including history, ethnology, linguistics, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, and art studies. The deadline for abstract submissions has been extended to August 20, 2024.
A new issue of Slovak Ethnology 2/2024 has been published
The new issue of Slovenský národopis/Slovak Ethnology 2/2024 has just been published in English. The theme of this issue is "Issues of Uncertainty: Insecurity and Precarisation as a Life Experience," and the guest editors are Ana Luleva and Milena Benovska. The issue is publicly available online. We wish you pleasant summer reading!
Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov will give a lecture at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Centre at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan
Our colleagues Prof. Elena Marushiakova and Prof. Veselin Popov will deliver an invited lecture on July 4, 2024, at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Centre at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. Their lecture, titled “Roma Civic Emancipation before WWII: National and Transnational Dimension and the Problems of the Standardisation of the Romani (Gypsy) Language,” will address Roma civic emancipation before the Second World War and discuss historical and linguistic challenges faced by the Roma.
Ľubica Voľanská is co-organizing a side event at the 10th UNESCO General Assembly in Paris.
The event "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Education" will take place on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. It is the result of a collaboration between the Permanent Delegation of the Slovak Republic to UNESCO, the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and the Ethnographic Society of Slovakia. Contributions from colleagues from the Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, and Slovakia will be presented.

Slovenský národopis/Slovak Ethnology has advanced to the second quartile (Q2) in the field of anthropology in the SJR (Scimago Journal & Country Rank) database, which derives bibliometric data from the SCOPUS. Being classified in Q2 means that our journal is ranked among the top 26-50% of journals in the given field. Peter Maňo will give a lecture on undergoing ritual suffering
Our colleague, Peter Maňo, will present an invited lecture titled 'Why do people voluntarily suffer for the gods?' at the cultural center 'Diera do sveta' in Liptovský Mikuláš. In seeking answers to these questions, he will present research findings from Mauritius, where the local Tamil Hindu community annually organizes the extremely challenging Thaipusam Kavadi ritual. A new issue of Slovak Ethnology 1/2024 has been published
The content of the (Slovak language) issue was co-edited by guest editors Zuzana Beňušková (Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology SAS) and Sanja Zlatanović (Institute of Political Sciences SAS) and includes articles by Slovak, Serbian, and Croatian authors on the topic of Revitalization and Functioning of Cultural Heritage in Public Spaces.
