Recording of the Gala Ceremony for the 2024 Science and Technology Awards
STVR aired a recording of the 2024 Science and Technology Awards ceremony on 23 November 2024, during which our colleague, Prof. Elena Marushiakova-Popova, received the prestigious award in the category "Personality of Science and Technology 2024". She was honoured for her internationally acclaimed scientific research in the field of Romani studies and the history of Roma in Europe. Academy of Romani Studies (Akadémia rómskych štúdií)
From November 13 to 15, 2024, the traditional and well-established event, the Academy of Romani Studies, took place in Prague. The 9th edition was organized by our Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV, v.v.i) in cooperation with the Department of Romani Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague.
Elena Marushiakova Wins the 2024 Science and Technology Award
Our colleague, Elena Marushiakova, was awarded the 2024 Science and Technology Award in the Personality of Science and Technology category on November 15, 2024, for her internationally acclaimed scientific research in the field of Romani studies and the history of Roma as an ethnic minority in Europe. The award is announced by the Ministry of Education, Research, Science, and Youth of the Slovak Republic and organized by the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information. Congratulations!
Ľubica Voľanská facilitated a seminar on the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
From November 11 to 13, 2024, our colleague Ľubica Voľanská facilitated a seminar organized by the Center for Traditional Folk Culture, intended for future collaborators disseminating knowledge about the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The event focused on the functioning of the Convention, exploring the opportunities it offers for the protection and promotion of living heritage, and preparing nominations for lists of intangible cultural heritage.
The new publication by Tatiana Zachar Podolinská, Ethical Challenges in Ethnology and Anthropology: The Case of Slovakia (Late 20th and 21st Centuries)
IESA SAS has published a new work by Tatiana Zachar Podolinská, which focuses on reflecting ethical approaches and the formation of ethical standards in ethnology and social anthropology. The aim of the publication is to introduce Slovak readers to the discussion on the issues of ethical research designs in the social sciences, including a brief historical context of ethics and research integrity in ethnology and social anthropology in the 20th and 21st centuries, with emphasis on Slovakia.
Award for Designer Matúš Hnát
On Monday, November 11, 2024, the National Design Awards 2024 were presented at the Nová Scéna Theatre. In the Poster and Visual category, Matúš Hnát received the award for his poster citylight campaign for the 9th Bratislava Book Festival BRaK 2022 with the theme Not Afraid to Not Grow. Hopa lide at the Etnofilm Čadca Film Festival
This week marks the start of another edition of the Ethnofilm Čadca Festival, with contributions from experts from our institute. This year, the film Hopa lide, directed by our colleague Petr Nuska, has been selected for the festival. The film will be screened on Tuesday, November 12, at 3:00 p.m. at the Department of Mediamatics and Cultural Heritage of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Žilina. Conference Suburbanisation: community, identity and everydayness
Save the date! We would like to draw your attention to the interdisciplinary conference Suburbanisation: Community, Identity, and Everydayness, co-organized by our institute. The conference will take place on April 28-29, 2025, in Bratislava and will focus on suburbanisation. The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers from interdisciplinary fields to engage in dialogue about the socio-spatial dynamics that are transforming suburban landscapes in the region.
The 9th edition of the international event Academy of Romani Studies – ARS 2024
The Institute of Ethnology and Social AnthropologySAS and the Department of Romani Studies, Department of Ethnology, Central European and Balkan Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, are organizing the 9th edition of the international event Academy of Romani Studies – ARS 2024, which will take place on November 14-15, 2024, in Prague. The event is held as part of the APVV RELIROMA project.
IESA SAS became the coordinator of a European MSCA project
In September 2024, our institute became the coordinator of the RomChords project, supported under the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) scheme of the Horizon Europe program. The project will expand the boundaries of our research in ethnomusicology and Romani studies, foster interdisciplinary collaboration at both national and international levels, and contribute to the preservation of Romani intangible cultural heritage.
A new thematic issue of Slovenský národopis/Slovak Ethnology 3/2024 has been published
The special issue, published in English, is dedicated to the theme Family as a Safe Haven? Families in Social Practice and Narratives in Times of Crises. The guest editors are Soňa G. Lutherová from the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Adriana Zaharijević from the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory at the University of Belgrade.
