Jaroslava Panáková and Zuzana Beňušková at the 23rd International Film Festival Etnofilm 2024
We would like to draw your attention to the 23rd edition of the International Film Festival Etnofilm, taking place from 12 to 15 November 2024 in Čadca, Nitra, Bratislava, Žilina a Banská Bystrica. This documentary film festival showcases a wide range of themes in social and cultural anthropology and ethnology. Our colleagues Jaroslava Panáková and Zuzana Beňušková are actively involved in the organisation. You are warmly invited!
International Project – Doctoral Network in CEE within SSH
The Presidium of the Slovak Academy of Sciences approved on October 10, 2024 the international project of the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology (IESA SAS, Bratislava, Slovakia) and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IAE PAS, Warsaw, Poland) titled Cultural Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Social Research from Central and Eastern Europe – Doctoral Network Preparation, submitted under the joint projects of SAS–PAS (Warsaw, Poland).

Annual Meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society in Sofia and Romani Studies Conference
From September 24-27, 2024, the annual meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society was held in Sofia, in conjunction with an international conference on Romani studies. The conference's diverse program included a special panel supported by the APVV Reliroma project, titled Religiosity, Spirituality, and Non-religiosity among the Roma.

Slovak Academy of Sciences award in the category of Outstanding scientific monograph
On September 18, 2024, the Presidium of the SAS awarded researchers who published results of exceptional scientific prestige. Among the awardees were our colleagues: Mgr. Zuzana Panczová, PhD., PhDr. Gabriela Kiliánová, CSc., and PhDr. Mgr. Tomáš Kubisa, PhD., who received the award in the category of Outstanding Scientific Monograph for the work on ethnography in the service of the Third Empire Národopis v službách Tretej ríše. Elena Marushiakova's project proposal received the Seal of Excellence
The project proposal eRoma - eHISTORY OF ROMA EMANCIPATION, submitted by our colleague Elena Marushiakova for funding under the Horizon Europe ERC call ERC-2024-POC, ERC PROOF OF CONCEPT GRANTS, has been awarded the Seal of Excellence. This is a mark of quality granted to project proposals that successfully meet all the strict participation conditions and evaluation criteria but could not be funded due to the available budget for the calls.
A new publication by Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov at Brill | Schöningh
Our colleagues Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov have just published a book at Brill | Schöningh titled Stalin vs Gypsies: Roma and Political Repressions in the USSR. In it, the authors describe the political repressions against the Roma, which they understand as part of the mass terror and brutality against all Soviet citizens, integrating the history of the Roma into the general history of the USSR. The publication is available in Open Access.
IESA SAS published the Book of Abstracts from the conference "Quest: How to Make Digital Work For, Not Against Learning"
The online conference "Quest: How to Make Digital Work For, Not Against Learning" took place on June 6, 2024, as part of the project Exploring the Past in Peace, supported by the ERASMUS+ grant scheme. The Book of Abstracts contains contributions from conference participants in Slovak, English, Hungarian, and Italian and is available online.
The deadline for submitting paper abstracts for the Academy of Romani Studies 2024 has been extended to August 20, 2024
The Academy of Romani Studies 2024, to be held on November 14–15, 2024, in Prague, aims to present current research related to Romani communities in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia and to provide a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers from various fields — including history, ethnology, linguistics, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, and art studies. The deadline for abstract submissions has been extended to August 20, 2024.
A new issue of Slovak Ethnology 2/2024 has been published
The new issue of Slovenský národopis/Slovak Ethnology 2/2024 has just been published in English. The theme of this issue is "Issues of Uncertainty: Insecurity and Precarisation as a Life Experience," and the guest editors are Ana Luleva and Milena Benovska. The issue is publicly available online. We wish you pleasant summer reading!
Elena Marushiakova and Veselin Popov will give a lecture at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Centre at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan
Our colleagues Prof. Elena Marushiakova and Prof. Veselin Popov will deliver an invited lecture on July 4, 2024, at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Centre at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. Their lecture, titled “Roma Civic Emancipation before WWII: National and Transnational Dimension and the Problems of the Standardisation of the Romani (Gypsy) Language,” will address Roma civic emancipation before the Second World War and discuss historical and linguistic challenges faced by the Roma.
