Anotácia:
Dr. István Santha is doing anthropological research on the “infrastructures of deportation.” He traces how common civic infrastructures were fused with common knowledge (such as gossip, anecdotes, and stereotypes) and transformed into killing machines in the historical circumstances of specific situations. These infrastructures retained traces of these transformations after the genocidal episodes ended. It focuses on the memories of survivors and, in this way, enables them to resist the inhuman experiences they went through when people were transformed into cargo for transport to slaughterhouses in Eastern Europe during the 1940s. It collects unstructured interviews with members of the Hungarian- and Slovak-speaking Jewish community in Bratislava and Košice and conducts further research in archives and traces deportation routes. The project is a multidisciplinary research project in oral history and infrastructural anthropology.
